| Words from R2C2H2 I believe the true goal of every artist is to try
to convey the uniqueness or individuality in themselves and to share
their uniqueness and individuality with the world. But when one, whether
practitioner or observer, ventures into the realm of art, one immediately
finds that the so-called uniqueness quality in art is not that odd or
exotic at all. In looking for differences or abnormalities we often
find that many elements in art are more alike than unalike. This also
occurs in life and this would explain the universal appeal of art, because
art like life is diverse in so many ways yet all the elements involved
in both categories is fundamentally the same. I adamantly feel that true art deals with emotions, and emotions are an integral and intricate part of the human experience. When thinking of emotions I also think of spirituality because spirituality can escape the carnal and material barriers of mankind and can go on for eternity. This explains why true art like great suits, shoes, cars, hairstyles, etc., is never "out of style" no matter the era or region of origin. In other words there's nothing "new" under the sun that has not already been done. What can be "new" or "original" is how the artist, through her/his own personal vision, rearranges these elements of our times and history to fit her/his own individual expression. You could almost compare an artist to being a human synthesizer whose job it is to take in all experiences, environments, objects, events or anything of remote interest and spit it back out in her/his own creative way. I also think, like Romare Bearden, that a true artist is like a great big whale which must swallow anything that may come his/her way in order to receive inspiration and wholeheartedly try to fulfill an artistic hunger which won't go away until you die. |
